Hot Cheap Stocks For 2014

The debate over anonymous sources has been raging in journalism probably as long as there has been journalism.

Except for a handful of purists, most people in the field agree that there are instances when they are extremely valuable. Many powerful investigative pieces that have been beneficial to society would never have come to light without those ghostly creatures.

There's also a general consensus that they should be used carefully, that every effort should be made to get material on the record, that blind cheap shots have no business seeing the light of day.

But in the day-to-day sausage making, there are way too many instances when confidential sources are relied on when they shouldn't be.

Which brings us to New York Times Public Editor Margaret Sullivan and her newly launched AnonyWatch, which showcases instances when the Times relies on unnamed sources and Sullivan thinks it shouldn't.

Advisors' Opinion:

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX  ) is one of the most interesting plays within the copper market. It recently broke the mold when it decided to merge with the oil and gas firm, Plains Exploration & Production. The merger reduces Freeport's dependency on the volatile metal prices, but it also means that management must navigate two very different industries.

Gold investors weren't the only ones having a rough year. Other commodities such as silver and copper have been sinking this year as well, sending top stocks such as Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) and Freeport McMoRan (NYSE: FCX  ) down by double digits. Again, looking at the chart, you can see a pretty big correlation between falling commodity prices and the subsequent fall in the price of each stock.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX  ) rounds out the list of today's laggards, with a 2.3% loss. This is the third straight day of declines for the copper miner, which continues to struggle with market repercussions from a deadly mining disaster at one of its locations in Indonesia. The lost production from the closed mine is estimated to be around $15 million per day.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX) fell 1.1 percent to $35.41 in early New York trading as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. lowered its recommendation on the largest U.S. miner to neutral from buy, citing a lack of near-term catalysts to drive the stock higher.

One company that is about to face the brunt of its patent cliff exposure is Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) , which is set to lose exclusivity for its former megablockbuster Singulair in its last major worldwide markets this year. There are still some interesting molecules in the pipeline and several major approvals pending. However, I don't think Merck stock is worth owning. Here are a few reasons why.

Revenue of $10.93 billion beat the consensus estimate of $10.60 billion. Merck issued guidance and sees its EPS being in a range of $4.44 to $4.77 and revenues to be between $42.4 billion to $43.2 billion. Shares gained 1.05 percent, closing at $58.58.

A day after Pfizer's meltdown, Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) shares fared little better on its earnings day. The drugmaker fell 2.8% after seeing a sharp decline in top and bottom lines, down 9% and 8%, respectively. As we saw with Pfizer, generic drugs put a dent in profits from some of its former blockbusters, among them, the baldness drug Propecia, and asthma medication SIngulair, sales of which dropped by $1 billion, or about 75% from last year. Merck also cut its full-year EPS guidance, saying it now sees per-share profits of $3.45-$3.55, down from the previous forecast of $3.60-$3.70.

Wendy's (NASDAQ: WEN  ) knows what it's doing. It has generated more interest from consumers and investors thanMcDonald'sandBurger King Worldwide (NYSE: BKW  ) as of late, which has everything to do with its new strategy. Not only has Wendy's undergone a brand transformation with newly remodeled restaurants and a redesigned logo, but it has also implemented a highly successful strategy with limited-time menu offerings.

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg/Getty Images Don't let the recent weakness at McDonald's (MCD) lead you to the conclusion that all burger flippers are struggling. It's just not true, and Burger King (BKW) proved that in its latest quarter. McDonald's longtime nemesis posted better than expected profitability during the first three months of the year, fueled by marginally positive comparable-restaurant sales for the period. It may not seem like much of a victory. Burger King's worldwide comps rose 2 percent, with its U.S. and Canada locations clocking in with a meager 0.1 percent increase. However, even that baby step up is better than the 1.7 percent decline at McDonald's. Unlike Ronald McDonald, Burger King isn't clowning around. The Whopper Beats the Big Mac? This would be an opportune time for Burger King to break away from the larger chain that it's been copying for years. We've seen Burger King offer up items that are blatantly similar to McCafe smoothies, Chicken McBites, Big Macs, Egg McMuffins, and even the cult fave McRibs. However, now that McDonald's is in a rut -- having posted three consecutive quarters of negative comparable-restaurant sales in this country -- it appears Burger King is ready to carve its own path. "We started off 2014 strong by generating comparable sales growth across all four regions during the first quarter," Burger King Worldwide CEO Daniel Schwartz explained in the fast food giant's earnings release. "Despite severe winter weather in the U.S. and Canada, our commitment to launching fewer, more impactful products and simplifying in-restaurant operations helped drive improved performance." If there's one thing in that statement that should stand out as a sharp contrast to the current strategy at McDonald's it's that Burger King is rolling out "fewer" products as it is "simplifying" operations. That's an entirely different strategy than the one being used by McDonald's, which seems to involve rolling out a lot of new menu ite
